Land Ownership 35% open

Great Britain

What data is expected?

Data should include maps of lands with parcel layer that displays boundaries in addition to a land registry with information on registered parcels of land. The Index focuses on assessing open land tenure data (describing the rules and processes of land property). Responsible use may enable tenure security and increase the transparency of land transactions. The assessment criteria were developed in collaboration with Cadasta Foundation. For more information on land ownership datasets and where they're located, check out Cadasta Foundation's Data Overview.

  • Parcel boundaries (inc. latitude and longitude)
  • Parcel ID
  • Property value (i.e. Price Paid, Property Tax Value)
  • Tenure Type (ie. leasehold, freehold, protected lands, public lands, customary lands)

In an open and machine-readable format CSV, DBF, SHP, SHX Known formats are CSV for tabular data and Esri Shapefile for polygons. Data may be available in other formats but I am unable to establish this from open sources i.e. without paying for data.

Up-to-date Yes The body of data is updated incrementally during the process of conveyancing and registration of property and land.
Publicly available No Other than some generalised polygons for England and Wales, the relevant data is not directly accessible on the public web.

findable_steps I was previously aware of the relevant data holders, so navigated from their homepages to the relevant sections of their sites. This response refers to information about the data rather than the data itself as most is only available on commercial terms.
Collected by government Yes
usability 3 The data is only available on commercial terms but by reputation it is as easily usable as I would normally expect for data of this type.
