Air Quality 100% open

Great Britain

What data is expected?

Data about the daily mean concentration of air pollutants, especially those potentially harmful to human health. Data should be available for all air monitoring stations or air monitoring zones in a country. The Index focusses on key pollutants as defined by the World Health Organisation. See our methodology section for more information.

  • Particulate matter (PM)
  • Sulphur oxides (SOx)
  • Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
  • Carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Ozone
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Available per air monitoring station/zone

How open is the data?

Question Answer Comment
Openly licenced Yes
In an open and machine-readable format CSV
Downloadable at once Yes Data from monitoring stations is available via an interface that allows the user to select individual or groups of stations, pollutants, date ranges, etc. but the user would need to submit numerous searches in order to download all the data. Reviewer: User is able to select all the regions in the UK country and all of the pollutants with a multi-select. Not very user friendly, but a feature that allows bulk data download. But we may discuss this, as the 256 column limit is one that disallows for bulk data download.
Up-to-date Yes
Publicly available Yes
Available free of charge Yes
findable 4
findable_steps No steps. I am a user of the data and was previously aware of Defra's UK-AIR site. However the data is readily discoverable via Google searches for "air pollution data" or "air quality data".
licence_url https://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/data/ The data is re-usable under the Open Government Licence.
Collected by government Yes
usability 3 The data is readily usable in format but given the subject matter there is an amount of underpinning knowledge necessary to understand and interpret it.
collector_name Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra)
characteristics Particulate matter (PM), Sulphur oxides (SOx), Nitrogen oxides (NOx), Carbon monoxide (CO), Ozone, Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Available per air monitoring station/zone
location https://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/data/ - UK-AIR Data Archive This facility provides downloadable data from 1500 sites across the UK that monitor air quality.

Accepted with one correction: Data may be downloaded in bulk by multi-selecting data on the link provided. Not a very user friendly way for bulk data, but the feature is present whatsoever. But we may discuss this, as the 256 column limit is one that disallows for bulk data download.
